A Few Good Quotes

"There is something so settled and stodgy about turning a great romance into next of kin on an emergency room form, and something so soothing and special, too." ~ Anna Quindlen

"Courage doesn't always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, 'I will try again tomorrow.'" ~Mary Anne Radmacher

See What I Bought at the Store Today?

Cat food? Yes, cat food. But why, you ask, would I buy cat food when I don't have a cat? Great question. I wondered that myself, when I saw it on our shopping list. I was at the store, getting some "essentials," when I glanced down my list and saw cat food written in my husband's handwriting. I would have ignored the item, except he had written this next to it - (please) =).

How can I say no to that? But let me back up.

When we came home from the hospital and my mom was staying with us, a ginger cat starting showing up regularly at our house. We were eating pretty much every lunch and dinner on our back patio and each meal time, he would promptly show up and look around for food. Ruthie quickly learned that cats say "meow" and would say it over and over again, so excitedly. Ian and my mom (yes, my mom, who says she doesn't like animals) teamed up on me, claiming the cat was skinny and hungry and both of them starting giving him food.

Then Ian says we need to name him. Now I feel like things have gone too far, but I've clearly already lost control. And anytime I try to tell Ian that we just had a baby and don't need a new cat, he says, "But look how much Ruthie loves him. And she's learning to be gentle with him." This, I suppose is true, and she really does love him, but I'm thinking all our extra affection should go to Jonah, right? Who's with me?

Alas, I seem to have lost. The cat has been named - Emilio (he has a bandanna around his neck - which I try to tell Ian means he belongs to someone, but Ian says he's too skinny to have a real home - so a Spanish name seemed fitting), and he has been feed tuna, left overs, milk, water and now cat food from our house today. He seems quite a home. Oh dear.

I still like to pretend we don't have a cat; but when you have cat food in your shopping cart, that's a pretty hard feat to accomplish.

We'll see what the next few days bring. But my guess is, lots of visits from a ginger cat named Emilio.
